Sewing with Kids: Carrying Pouch

Yesterday, Sophia announced that she wanted to sew. I'm glad she took the initiative. I keep telling myself that she's ready to learn more sewing skills. Once her brother went down for his nap, we went to work. Sophia wanted to make a pouch to fit 3x5 index cards. She's using the cards for her homework and drawing.

First, Sophia sketched what she envisioned in her head. We used some denim scraps from my altered skirt to cut out the pouch. I cute the denim on the fold so only the sides needed to be sewn. We put the right sides of the denim together. I taught Sophia the whip stitch to close the sides of her pouch.

Once the sides were sewn closed, we sewed a long ribbon (about 5 feet long) to make the strap. She wanted to be able to wear it across her body. Of course we had to add a little bling to the pouch with some stick-on jewels.

Sophia wore it for the rest of the afternoon. She's pretty proud of her work. The entire project only took about 15 minutes.

She's already planning on wearing her new bag on her next nature walk!
