My Secret Garden
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a very familiar plant growing in the front of our apartment building. In between the ornamental grass and some other landscaped bushes, I found a young squash plant. I have no idea how it got there. Did one of our neighbors throw some squash off the stoop or one of the balconies? And squash seemed kind of random, right?
The plant is growing quickly. Everyday, I point out the plant to the kids. How big the blooms are. We talk about pollination. A few days ago, I noticed that we have a small squash growing. I wonder what type of squash it is.
Fall weather is creeping in, so I hope we get to harvest at least one squash before the first frost. That is, if none of the kids in the neighborhood do something stupid to the plant first.
While I may not be good at container gardening, I can live vicariously through this surprise secret garden. Even if I am a little tired of eating squash.
Did you have a garden this summer? How is your fall harvest?
